V & B GOLF

HOLA! Fellow MIGS
(for those who do not know, Mature and Interesting Golfers).

Well the Fiesta was as  always a huge success.  We had good weather, good golf, met old friends and made several new ones.  As usual Keith got us all going, and thinking about our swings, some with wonderful results and some…. Well we all think the clinics great fun and of great benefit, and wouldn't be without him.

Michael and Helena, organised things in their usual efficient way.  How they manage to keep smiling sometimes, beggars belief! But then that is the fun of it all.  Where would be without the hiccups, laughs, and lost souls?

The real star of the Fiesta was Nancy Pearson, who at 80+ won player of the second session. Winning more events than anyone else.  Her quiet and charming manner at all times are a great example to us all.  Would that I am like her at that age.  Well we all have our dreams!  Tommy Johnson as usual was in great demand, both on and off the course; we are so lucky to have our own personal physio in our group.  Pat Edworthy as usual, was attention seeking, managing to break her ankle on the third day out.  Poor Pat, last year it was her shoulder that stopped her playing, but this year she stayed the whole four weeks and cheered us on from her buggy , even managing to dance on one leg!  At least it gave David Robinson a chance to get to know what he could be in for!

Dorothy Taylor and Audrey Nicholas got the prizes for orienteering in the dark from the Airport and for the most stylish hats on the course.

I think the highlight for me was Herbert Lee's birthday, when the whole 24 of us went to a little Portuguese Restaurant, over the bridge in Tavira  for Dinner.  We were all very merry drinking the wine by kind courtesy of Herbert when towards the end of the evening a party of Portuguese, also celebrating a birthday had one of their guests stand up and sing unaccompanied, pure Portuguese blues.  It was just beautiful, and then to all our surprise, our Mary Walker stood up and unaccompanied, sang a song from Porky and Bess in just the sweetest voice.  Applause from both sides meant another song from our Portuguese friend and another from Mary.  These are the little gems that make very special memories.

It was great to see Carl and Christine old friends from Eurogolf days, which inspired David Sears, Pat Edworthy, David Robinson and myself to travel to Sussex to hear Spencer's Night Hawks play an evening of Jazz.  What a talented lot you all are.  The other fun thing was to be able to go to Ayamonte Carnival this year.  Val, Herbert, Ann James, Jackie and myself all bought carnival hats and entered into the spirit of it all.  The procession was just mind boggling, all those fantastic costumes,  Sadly halfway through the heavens opened and the rain just cascaded out of the sky sending everyone rushing for shelter.  It did give me the eye-opener of seeing the Carnival Queen leap from her float and rip off her headdress and see that she was in fact a he!!!!

The annual North v South i.e. Scotland v Suffolk, resulted in Suffolk winning the Wooden Spoon!  Andrew will be really pleased to get rid of it at last.

Back in the UK, March saw our first event at Rushmere Golf Club in Suffolk on the 19th.  The wind was so strong that driving the car to the course was just as difficult as driving the ball.  Gusts of over 60 miles an hour saw our trolleys blowing over many times.  All was well until about the 12th hole when the hail started,  it lasted for only two holes but it was enough to soak us to the skin, then of course the sun came out and lasted for the rest of the day.  However, we all enjoyed it and the scores were remarkably good.  The winners were Val Garrod, Godfrey Camerilli and Brian Perks the Rushmere Captain.  Brian made us most welcome and the Cottage Pie and Apple Pie and Custard were most appreciated.

April 2 we played at Costessey Park in Norwich, where although very mild we started in heavy drizzle.  Fortunately this stopped half way round and we then played in glorious sunshine.  Three couples tied on 39 points the winners on count back were Jackie Howard and Bill Gales.

There is still time to join us at Dunston Hall on 5 May for Coffee and Bacon Roll at 10 a.m. followed by 18 holes of golf and two course meal.  Get in touch if you would like to join us.

Future dates are June 11 Southwold Suffolk and July 9 Diss in Norfolk.  Give me a call if you would like to play.

Meanwhile  Good Golfing.  Be Happy.
