V & B GOLF

HOLA! Fellow MIGS
(for those who do not know, Mature and Interesting Golfers).

I'm sorry this letter is late, but I have been away more than home (lucky me) so thought I would wait until our Cadiz Break to tell you all the news.

It has been an enjoyable year, after our wet start the weather just got better and better.  Sadly we had to cancel our break at Dunston hall due to insufficient numbers, but had a days play there instead.  Right at the end we were caught in an electric storm and stood huddled in the middle of the fairway watching lightning run along the powerlines.  Quite spectacular, but very scary.  We had coffee and bacon baps on arrival and a lovely meal to follow.

June 11 we played at Southwold in Suffolk and a glorious day of sunshine on their superb course.  The greens were a delight.  This time we played a singles competition, which was won by David Sears.

July 9 saw us at Diss in Norfolk, again most enjoyable with a team event won by Rosemary Digby, Bill Gales, and myself with Julia Amey, Gillian Gardner Smith, and David Sears coming second.

Our break in Scotland was fantastic.  We were so lucky as the weather until we arriverd was just terrible.  I managed to keep up my reputation for good weather and it was lovely on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  We were delighted to be joined by the six- strong Scottish contingent from Glen Bervie and a good time was had by all.  Sadly our visit to Glen Bervie on the Monday had to be aborted due to the rain just unable to keep away any longer.  But, a trip into Edinburgh, to the Craft Festival, more than made up for missing the golf.  We were also able to watch the Parade, some of us climbing a deserted JCB for a better view, but hanging on by our fingernails.  All worthwhile.  On the Friday Stanley Gray, Ann Smiley, Rosemary Digby, and David Robinson were the winners, though Stanley's method of scoring did leave a little doubt !  On the Saturday Rosemary Digby, David Sears, and myself were the winners and on Sunday, for the singles event, David Robinson came first with 34 points and Sue Seabrook second with 33 and David Sears third with 32, all very close indeed.

September 24 saw us at Ufford Park on a windy but fine day until the last two holes when the rain once again just couldn't wait to start.  We had bacon baps and coffee on arrival with a nice two-course meal afterwards.  We were delighted to be joined for supper by our dear friend Marjorie Enoch.

Our final jolly was at The Warren in Essex.  It was a very blustery day which tested us all but the weather kept fine.  Everyone made us so welcome from the Starter, Pro', Catering staff, and Secretary.  We played a singles and I won by one point from Rosemary Digby.  I had expected the three men to give us a run for our money, but this time all the girls won out.

Renewal of Subscriptions are now due at £15 per head.  Joining fee is still £25, the benefits are on the forms as before, which apply here in the UK and in Spain and Portugal.  Visitors are always welcome to join us at an extra cost of £5 on the day.  Anyone bringing a new contact will receive a £5 discount whether or not the contact joins V&B.

Our visit to Cadiz was such fun.  Although a very small band, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  Although into November, we had such warm sunny weather we were all in shorts and shirts.  We played four different courses, Montenmedio Golf Club, which had stunning views, Novo Sancti Petri courses A and B, very challenging with just so many trees, but nice view of the sea, and Ballena Golf Club, on the sea edge and very flat but great fun.  We had some of our old friends who come in February and also made new friends with Mercia Selby, Christine Fitzpatrick, Joan McGee, and her friend Les.  Les won the prize for the most scenic route to Ballena, but made it in the end !  As usual, Michael and Helena organised everything splendidly and of course everyone went away with a prize.  As all the drinks were included in the price of the holiday a merry time was had in the bar and at the dinner table.  The hotel was right on the beach, which was so lovely to walk on with sand stretching for miles.  Barbara, Mavis, and Jean spent one morning collecting shells for Helena's garden, so no time was wasted.  It is a beautiful area and on our free day David and I took a bus tour around Cadiz which was very enjoyable, so much history, and on the Saturday drove to Sanlucar de Barrameda with Michael and Helena and had lunch at a lovely fish restaurant on the beach.  As flight was not until the evening on the Sunday we did a tour around the area in the car and found a delightful beach at Cabo Trafalgar.  Lovely views and lighthouse.  It would make a wonderful place to picnic.

Well as you see it has been a full year and the programme for V&B UK this year is as follows:

March 11 Sheringham, Norfolk,
April 8 Thorpness Suffolk,
May 6,7,8 French Break Le Touquet,
June 10 Rookery Park Suffolk,
July 15 Aldeburgh Suffolk,
August 12 Brett Vale Suffolk,
September 23 Newmarket Norfolk,
October 14,15,16 Irish Break Dublin, City West Championship Course.

I do hope you will be able to join us on some of the above.
Wishing you a Happy New Year and Great Golfing in 2005.
