Facilities
6 kms from LAGOS and 1,5kms from the beach at PRAIA DA LUZ IDEAL FOR QUIET HOLIDAYS & GOOD VALUEComfortable apartments in a superior detached villa. Quinta Helenita is situated in a good residential location, on high ground overlooking Praia da Luz with its cliffs and the sea to the south and over the vineyards, the olive and citrus groves and the village of Espiche to the mountains of Monchique in the north. The villa is some 300 metres from the main EN125 coast road just off the road between Espiche and Praia da Luz. The small village of Espiche is about 600metres distant and there you can find local shops, bars and restaurants. The lively and fashionable beach resort of Praia da Luz is only 1500 metres away and here there is a superb beach with many bars, restaurants and two discotheques. Several very good supermarkets will provide all your international food needs and there is also a small daily market and a butcher's The many restaurants range from simple Portuguese via a range of international eating places including an Indian restaurant. Shops include Newsagents, Chemists, several Souvenir shops and Boutiques. Luz even boasts a Post Office and a Bank as well as, of course, a Catholic Church (where the Anglican Church of the Algarve also has services at regular intervals). Water sports are also well catered for locally. One of the best-loved towns in the Algarve is Lagos, which is just 6 kms away. Here where much of the town centre is pedestrian-only, there is a myriad of attractive narrow streets opening into pleasant squares and containing many restaurants, bars, night-clubs and discotheques. There is a wide range of shops of all types, two regular daily markets as well as a Saturday market. This historic town has retained much of its old town wall system and there is a wealth of other buildings of interest including the ancient slave market, the hospital, which was formerly the residence of Henry the Navigator, and the fabulous golden church of Santo António. The town museum is well worth a visit and the new Cultural Centre offers a varied programme of exhibitions, plays, and musical events. Exhibitions of paintings and sculpture are often held in the slave market and in the Council Headquarters. Lagos has a wide waterfront promenade linking the old “Fortaleza”, at the harbour mouth, to the recently completely yacht marina. Boat trips to the famous Algarve caves and to explore the rocky coastal cliffs and coves start from Lagos, which also has its own superb beaches of course. Other worthwhile excursions from Quinta Helenita would be to Sagres and Cape St. Vincent with its famous lighthouse and towering cliffs, about 30 kilometres away. A longer, but equally worthwhile trip could be to go to Vila do Bispo and then head north along the west coast where there are plenty of wild and largely deserted beaches worthy of a visit. Then onwards as far as Aljezur with its ancient hilltop Moorish castle, where you could have lunch at ”Chefe Dimas”, a renowned restaurant which is a short journey on the road to Odeceixe, or head inland, eastwards, to Monchique via Marmelete. In Monchique or nearby are many good restaurants where the speciality is the “Frango Piri-piri”, which is a young chicken grilled in a piquant sauce. On a clear day you should head for Fóia above the town of Monchique (full of interesting craftware and souvenir shops) and where, from the very top, the views are “forever” on a good day. Your return journey could be made towards Portimão, joining the EN125 near Penina, before heading westwards once again for Lagos and home. You should be able to buy some of the locally made “medronho” a fearsome spirituous liquor made from the berries of a bush that grows in the Monchique area. Within a few kilometres of Quinta Helenita, in almost any direction inland, you can really be “off the beaten track” and free to motor on rough “caminhos” or to walk in the really undeveloped and unspoiled Algarve where natural picnic sites abound. Between Luz and Sagres there are a number of almost deserted beaches, some have small beach bars, all are worth a visit. Sporting Facilities Clients staying at Quinta Helenita can play at specially discounted green fees at the 'new' Boa Vista course about 4kms away. It has 18 holes a par of 72 and a length of 6053 metres. There are some wonderful views over Lagos, Luz and the sea. Also there are discounted green fees at Parque da Floresta, 12kms to the west, or at Palmares, about 10kms to the east, and Penina, Alto Club and Carvoeiro, which are all within 45 minutes drive. HORSERIDING IS AVAILABLE AT Almadena, some 4kms away, and the Burgau Sports Centre, which is 6kms distant, offers TENNIS, SQUASH, TABLE TENNIS a SWIMMING POOL, a GYMNASIUM and a FITNESS CENTRE. TENNIS, BOWLS, an indoor SWIMMING POOL and a FITNESS CENTRE are also available at Parque da Floresta. For BIRDWATCHERS, and those who enjoy NATURAL HISTORY or BOTANY, John Measures a local naturalist is available to lead guided tours to areas of local interest. WATERSPORTS and FISHING are available at several locations in the western Algarve. |
